Transcribing is a great way of learning about music. It doesn't really matter, if you write it down nice and neat like I did, or just hit the repeat button on your stereo and play a long over and over until you have everything together, as long as you commit yourself to what is going on! Just do it! Have fun!
Something - The Beatles
bassplayer Paul McCartney
|
This is one of my favorite Beatles tunes, written by George Harrison and released on the Abbey Road album in 1969. Paul shows again his great skills as a bassplayer and bassline developer in the pop/rock idiom. Listen how he supports the song and gives so much to it's character and feel.

Prelude No.1 - J.S. Bach
Das wohltemperierte Klavier - erster Teil C - Dur / C - Major
|
Here my adaption of a Bach tune for the VI-string bass. Some of you might have played this on the piano already. I included chordsymbols and a functional harmony analysis. It helps a lot if you know what you are doing! Bach is a/the master in composition! Enjoy! click here for: guitar (treble clef)

YYZ - Rush
bassplayer Geddy Lee
|
This is one of Rushs favorite live songs and they enjoyed the challenge of playing it every time! Many Prog/Rock bands (e.g. Nine Inch Nails, Metallica, Rage against the mashine, Dreamtheater, Smashing Pumkins, Tenacious D, Kiss) will tell you that Rush had an enormous influence on them. Geddy is an outstanding bassplayer and lead singer. The tempo is UP, bit it's really fun to play once you get it down! click here for: play-a-long

Throw away your television - Intro
bass-solo by Flea
|
Flea is a great player, very versatile and unique. I love his often unconvential basslines! This is a fast one! It's the intro from the version "live at Hyde Park". Be careful, don't loose the beat!

Barbary Coast
bassline by Jaco Pastorius
|
Here comes Jaco! This is from his first record with Weather Report released in 1976. He starts of with one of his signature licks and then goes of to his famous 16th-note fingerstyle funklines. Similar to "Come on, come over" from his first solo album, but a bit slower!
|
Days of wine and roses
bass-solo by Jaco Pastorius
|
This is late Jaco, recorded in 1986 with drummer Brian Melvin and pianist Jon Davis. Jaco has been through a lot by then, but you can still the genius on this old standard.
|
Light of Day - live
bass-solo by George McArdle
|
In 1980 Little River Band recorded their live album Backstage Pass. Here you can see how George took his solo from the studio album (1978) to another level! It's all about sticking with your phrases! Good things grow!
|
Light of Day- studio
bass-solo by George McArdle

This is from the Little River Band album Sleeper Catcher, recorded in 1978 and shows George beautifully improvising with his frettless on a two bar vamp. Ken (Toronto, Canada), Thank You for the tip!

This is a real frettless beauty by another unique bassplayer, Mr. Pino Palladino. Remember Paul Young? This one is on a Oleta Adams record.
